Open letter to Microsoft Corporation.

Если у тебя есть свой сайт, пожалуйста, размести на нём настоящий документ. Чем больше людей разместят его на собственных сайтах, тем больше вероятность того, что администрация корпорации Microsoft прислушается к нему и выпустит adware-версию своей операционной системы Windows!
Настоящий документ специально составлен на английском языке, для того, чтобы администрация корпорации Microsoft смогла его прочитать. Несмотря на то, что правила форума приравнивают названия корпорации Microsoft и всех её программных продуктов к мату, в знак протеста против отсутствия среди них фриварной операционной системы, в настоящем документе эти термины не подвергаются цензуре, с той же целью.
Настоящий документ подлежит распространению на условиях лицензии Creative Commons 3.0, без производных произведений (ND).

Dear reader! If you have a website, please place this document on it. The more site owners will place this document on their sites, the more is probability that administration of Microsoft Corporation will find it rational and release an advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of their Windows operating system!
This document is intentionally composed in English, in order to allow administration of Microsoft Corporation to read it. Despite the forum rules, which equate names of Microsoft Corporation and all its software products to obscene terminology, in protest to lack of freeware operating system in their product line, these terms are not censored in this document, for same purpose.

Open letter to Microsoft Corporation.

Dear administration of Microsoft Corporation!
In 1976, one of your corporation founders, Bill Gates, made available his famous Open letter to hobbyists.
Over three decades passed since then. Mr. Gates is no more a hobbyist, but many other hobbyists still build their computers instead of buying them, in most cases from used parts. And i believe that it's now turn for us, hobbyists, to publish a similar document. :)
This document describes benefits that both your corporation and its customer base would acheive if you release an advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of your Windows operating system.
1. Reduction of piracy.
Nowadays lots of people can afford a computer, if not new, then a refurbished or homemade one, built from used parts. But not all of them can afford Windows operating system, since it, in fact, may cost more than all parts of such kind of computer together.
Even starter editoins of Windows are nowadays not freeware or adware!
Such people, who can afford a computer built from used parts, but cannot afford Windows (i'll call them unafforders), are divided into two categories. The first category, whom i'll call unhonest unafforders, simply steal Windows. The second category, whom i will call honest unafforders, are not allowed by their conscience to steal software. so they therefore prefer not to use Windows at all, and use freeware operating systems such as Linux, instead. In fact, the author of this document is one of such honest unafforders, who uses Linux.
Many (but not all) honest unafforders do not make strong distinction between open and closed source software, all they require from it is to be freeware. An example is excellent Opera browser, whish is closed source but freeware (and was adware in the past, in fact), and is used by lots of Linux users.
Linux is a great operating system, suitable for lots of task, and day by day becoming suitable for more and more of them. But there are a few tasks which it cannot perform. An example of such task is writing firmwares for some kinds of microcontrollers. Freeware development suites for many microcontrollers exist, but a high percent of them is not compatible with Linux and even with Wine. Honest unafforders such as me prefer not to make firmwares for such microcontrollers at all. Unhonest unafforders, on the other hand, prefer to steal Windows in order for such suites to run..
Releasing an advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of Windows will greatly, if not completely, reduce piracy related to it, isn't that what your corporation wants?
By the way, delivering advertising materials to those computers which do not have unlimited internet connection may be performed by releasing special monthly CDs sent to users for free via snail mail, or by special 800 type modem number which can be called at no cost only for this purpose, also monthly.
2. More income to Microsoft Corporation.
If someone buys a licensed copy of Windows, your corporation gets income from that customer only once, at the moment of buying. With adware version of Windows, you will continue getting income from advertisers all the time user uses it.
Also, with such a version you will get additional income from those who previously didn't provide you any income al all — that's unafforders, both honest and unhonest.
3. Peace of mind and extended capabilities to all users.
Piracy is both a sin and a crime.
With adware version of Windows, unhonest unafforders, who previously pirated Windows, will start using that version and no more be sinners and offenders in this meaning, and have normal sleep.
Honest unafforders already have normal sleep, but they will also benefit from releasing of adware version of Windows. Instead of using Linux only, they will start using both Linux and that adware version of Windows, which will make them capable of performing tasks they previously couldn't, such as running Linux-incompatible freeware microcontroller develomment suites (vide supra).
Think about it: we nowadays live in a strange world in which those who are honest actually have less capabilities than those who are not, and that's due to Microsoft's policy of not releasing adware version of Windows. Releasing of it can change this situation!
4. Less criticism and larger loyal fan base to your corporation.
Those who previously blamed Microsoft (including both types of unafforders, honest and unhonest) for not having an advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of Windows, will no more do that.
With adware version of Windows, Microsoft will no longer be a freeware users' enemy, and become their friend. Windows, on the other hand, will become more popular, since those who previously didn't use it at all (honest unafforders), will start using adware version of it. Isn't that also what your corporation wants?
The adware model works perfectly for sites such as GameJump, so i see no reasons for it not to work for your corporation. Therefore i think that these arguments are more than enough for your corporation to consider releasing an advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of Windows operating system, being long waited by lots of potential users including author of this document.

С 1997 года, когда у меня появился первый домашний IBM PC-совместимый компьютер на процессоре 386DX-40, и по 1999 год я являлся пользователем ворованной операционной системы MS-DOS 6.22.
В 1999 году, испытывая угрызения совести, я заменил её бесплатной версией операционной системы PTS-DOS 2000, а начиная с 2000 года, модернизировав свою ЭВМ, перешёл на использование ОС FreeDOS и Linux, пользователем которых являюсь по настоящее время. В 2004 году сделал следующий шаг, и отказался также от пиратской музыки и кинофильмов. Теперь я слушаю музыку, транслируемую по радио, и с лицензионных грампластинок производства СССР, найденных в помойках, а также MIDI-файлы с классической музыкой, перешедшей в общественное достояние, и смотрю кинофильмы, легально транслируемые телеканалами "Культура" и "Звезда".
Однако, насколько мне известно, согласно законодательству Российской Федерации, для того, чтобы перестать считаться пиратом, необходимо не только прекратить использование какого-либо ворованного ПО и полностью перейти на фриварь, но и загладить ущерб, нанесённый правообладателям использованием ворованного ПО в прошлом.
Поскольку я занимаюсь коллекционированием и реставрацией ретро-техники, в основном производства СССР, я хотел бы компенсировать ущерб, причинённый мной корпорации Microsoft использованием ворованной операционной системы MS-DOS 6.22 в период с 1997 по 1999 годы, путём дарения корпорации любого из экспонатов своей ретро-коллекции.
Я прошу руководство корпорации Microsoft связаться со мной через Jabber: numlock2000(собака)jabber(точка)ru и сообщить, как передать Вашей корпорации какой-либо экспонат моей ретро-коллекции, на Ваш выбор.

Dear administration of Microsoft Corporation!
Since 1997, when i got my first home IBM PC compatible computer - a 386DX-40 based machine, and until 1999, i was a user of stolen MS-DOS 6.22 operating system.
In 1999, driven by my conscience, i replaced it with free version of PTS-DOS 2000, and starting from 2000, after upgrading my computer, switched to FreeDOS and Linux, which i continue using to this day. In 2004, i made a step further, and also stopped listening to stolen music and watching stolen movies. Now i listen to music by radio, from licensed Soviet grammophone records found in dumpsters, and also to MIDI files with public domain classical music, and watch movies legally broadcasted by "Kultura" and "Zvezda" TV channels.
As far as i know, however, according to legislation of Russian Federation, in order to become a non-pirate, it is not enough just to stop using any stolen software and completely switch to freeware. It is also required to compensate the damage caused by using stolen software in the past.
Since my current hobby is collecting and restoration of vintage electronics, mostly Soviet-made, i want to compensate the damage which i caused to Microsoft corporation by using stolen MS-DOS 6.22 in period of years 1997..1999, by donating any object of my retro collection to the corporation.
I invite administration of Microsoft corporation to contact me via Jabber: numlock2000(at)jabber(dot)ru and provide information on how to donate any object of my retro collection, of your choice, to your corporation.

Delivering advertising to those users, who do not have unlimited internet, is a problem. In the Open letter above i suggested two ways of doing this: by CDROMs delivered via snail mail, or via a special free 8-800 type modem number. There's, however, another good solution.
When Opera gradually switched from adware to freeware, it tried offering users to choose between graphic and text advertisements. Google, Yandex and other site advertising providers also use not only graphical, but also text advertisements. And text advertisements is what i suggest your corporation to use in advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of Windows when you release it. If it works for them, why won't it work for you?
Here in Russia, one megabyte of GPRS data costs from 3 to 7 roubles, depending on netwotrk operator and data plan. Now let's calculate.
One graphical advertisement "weighs" about ten kilobytes. Delivering 10000 text advertisements to a user will "eat" 100 megabytes, or 300 to 700 roubles. Too expensive for an average honest unafforder!
One text advertisement containing slogan, phone number and URL "weighs" about 100 bytes (especially if traffic is compressed and URLs are passed through TinyURL or similar service). 10000 advertisements of this king will "eat" only 1 megabyte, or 3 to 7 roubles!
Your corporation should also not ignore such a way of delivering advertisements, as good old email. At least one network operator here in Moscow offers a service which allows unlimited GPRS traffic to and from its own dedicated email server (SMTP and web interface) for 60 roubles per month, while traffic to all other servers remains paid on per-megabyte basis. This scheme will allow your corporation to send advertisements (not only text, but also graphic!) to users covered by this service via email without causing them worry about traffic at all!
Thank in advance, with hope that advertising sponsored freeware (adware) version of Windows which i am talking about in my main Open letter and this addendum will someday be released by your corporation, to great pleasure of me and all other freeware-only honest unafforders!
